Chapter Twelve

was making strides, huge leaps to break down Lena’s urge to run. She had eaten a few bites from the fork, then I decided that was even too clean, and I tore pieces off and popped them into her mouth after dabbing on extra syrup and whipped cream.

Watching Lena eat was my new favorite hobby. It helped that she licked the syrup off my fingers after each bite. The woman loved the sugary goodness, if her eager mouth was any indication.

When the plate was mostly eaten, syrup and whipped cream covered her chin, chest, and even her hair. I might have gotten a little crazy with the bottle of whipped cream when she asked me for a double shot.

I threw the plate into the sink and turned to stare at her as she ate the last bites of bacon. I wanted to lick her clean, but there might be a more enjoyable way of getting the syrup out of her hair.

“Want to take a ride on the wild side tonight?”

Lena’s head popped up from the plate of bacon. “I thought that was what I’d just done? Letting you put sugar everywhere was a bit crazy for me.”

“Oh, honey. You need more fun in your life if you think that’s wild.”

Lena straightened her shoulders. “All right, Maverick, what’s your idea of cutting loose? A little breaking and entering, small explosives, wiring money to a small militia in Zimbabwe, oh, no wait, I’ve got it, skydiving over shark-infested waters?”

“I don’t do water landings at night anymore. That’s how you break a hip. I’m getting too old for that amount of adventure.” I was only partially joking. There had been a water landing at night a few years back that had gone poorly and almost every guy tore or broke something.

Lena’s eyes went wide.

“We’re not doing any of those things. I was thinking somewhere in between our ideas of a crazy night,” I said.

“What’s the compromise you have in mind?”

Will she go for it? I’ve gotten her this far. Just another little push.

“There is a hot tub that I know for a fact is not being used right now,” I said.

“Yeah, that’s because it’s closed. Oh my God, you liar. You do want to do a little B&E tonight?”

“It’s a simple locking mechanism.” I happened to notice when I toured the complex a few years ago. I hadn’t been to the pool area since.

“And the security cameras that are supposedly monitored by our nice night security guard, Joe?”

“I thought about that. We can’t turn on the lights and you’d have to be quiet. But there aren’t any cameras over the entrance or the hot tub. They’re only over the pool.” I shrugged. “Poor placement if you ask me. Are you in, or do you want to try something with less rule-breaking?”

Lena jumped off the counter. “I’m so in you don’t even know who you just challenged.” She laced her fingers through mine and trotted to the door, then straight to the elevator.
